"Makaila shares real world advice and personal experiences with: bullying, body image, and more to ensure that people know they are not alone, there is hope, and learn to be "Blatantly Honest."
By sharing her story, Makaila is helping other teens know they aren't out there alone in trying to maneuver through tough situations like bullying. She knows what she stands for and is using her voice to encourage others to do the same. Because real change takes courage!
Special Olympics Florida was fortunate to have Makaila come out to our Youth Summit to share her story with our athletes, unified partner, and coaches. Makaila was able to connect with the students as her experience growing up isn't much different compared to what some our students face on a day to day basis. Special Olympics Florida looks forward to working with Makaila again in the future and we hope her message is able to steward awareness, acceptance, and inclusion for all.
In January of each year, Florida Virtual School hosts a love of reading through Celebrate Literacy Week. This past January, we asked Makaila Nichols to host our opening session and speak to our families about her book and experiences with bullying. She blew us away with her fluent speaking skills and ability to modify her discussion to meet the audience needs. Our students felt comfortable reaching out to Makaila after the session to share personal stories and even writing samples. We were lucky to gain her insight on a tough topic affecting many kids today and hope to continue utilizing her in future events.
This is that one boy that was wearing the black hoodie that you talked to after your presentation earlier (aka Caden) but I just wanted to say thank you again. I feel more comfortable expressing myself now because you came and talked to me. I'm very grateful that you decided to even come to our school. You gave me hope that someone cares for me. Your story touched my heart because I have been in the same situation as you, except for the teacher thing. You made me realize that my insecurities are not as big of a deal as I think they are. I've prayed and prayed for help, God answered my prayers, Thank you. Ive always been told to toughen up and be a man, but I have feelings too and you help heal my feelings. Little things make a big difference.
I am a student from Falls City Middle School and I just wanted to thank you for sharing your story with us. I have been having a rough week with one of my friends and hearing you speak helped so much. You are so inspiring. I can only hope to be as strong as you one day.
I thought Makaila from Blatantly Honest was very inspiring to me and helped know that I’m not alone with being bullied and how it makes me feel. I felt empowered which is usually hard for me because of my autism. I never felt comfortable telling anyone except family that I was bullied. Thanks to Makaila and her lesson I felt comfortable to tell her and she gave me great advice which I’ll treasure forever. I’m just so glad that i attended Makaila’s lesson because it made my bullying problems go away and I’ll never forget what I learned. I’ll even recommend Makaila and Blatantly Honest to anyone else who is struggling with bullying so they can get the help I got today. I never thought about why bullies do what they do but I now know because of Makaila’s lesson. Thank you so much for your inspiring story Makaila. It means a lot to me and I’m glad to have met you today and to have learned about Blatantly Honest.
